OB's follow protocol: The frequency of invasive group b strep disease has declined since the adoption of surveillance and treatment protocols by ob's & peds. Since gbs can come & go, most moms will be screened at 35-37 wks & receive abx during labor if positive, if status unknown she will be treated & babies are monitored & tested for a specific period after delivery. Discuss your  concerns with your ob.

Usually unknown: Any new born baby staying for a prolonged period in a neonatal intensive care unit is at higher risk.  Other than that, most of late-onset group b strep infections are community acquired.

Babies are monitored & treated if any signs appear that suggest invasive disease.

Common pest: Group b strep is a periodic visitor to the digestive tract and at any given time 30% of women may have it show up on a vaginal swab. Except for it's well known nasty habit of hurting newborns &amp; occasionally causing urinary tract infections it can be just a benign hitchhiker in your system. If you have urinary symptoms antibiotic treatment may be helpful, but rarely eliminates this germ permanently

Possible but: Group B strep does not always cause a discharge but it can. Given your description, please be sure to have your doctor check to see if other infections can be contributing.

Not uncommon: Group b strep is a common germ found in the female genital tract.At any time as many as 1/3 will have it.It also comes and goes over time without treatment. It is important near the end of a pregnancy when it can transfer to the baby and cause serious infection.It can occasionally be a cause for a uti.It is unlikely to be of significance to you.

This is probably not: contamination, but could be colonization or an actual infection. Some people have Group B strep in their uterus and genital tract, without it causing an infection (colonization). This is most important when pregnant, because this bacteria can pass onto the baby, who can become very ill. Please discuss this with your doctor further.

Antibiotics: Hi
So the usual recommendation is that you get tested for Group B strep between 35-37 weeks of your pregnancy. If you test positive, they will give you IV antibiotics that cover GBS during labor because the GBS transmission to the baby occurs during childbirth. Generally speaking, if an antibiotic doesn't cover GBS, it won't stimulate it to become "stronger".

i had a urinalysis pos. for trace protein, trace ketones, & small leukocytes. no uti symptoms except urine leakage. culture = below 10kcfu group b strep. also had elevated skin cells in urinalysis. does this signal infection? neg. for stds but had bv?

: Was this a careful clean catch specimen? The findings are not consistent with a urinary tract infection as that small amount of bacteria in the colony count most likely comes from inevitable &amp; unavoidable contamination of the specimen by skin bacteria. However, if you're experiencing urinary symptoms, I recommend consulting a urologist for appropriate workup.
