Bulge, Discomfort: Most people with a groin hernia become aware of one due to the presence of a bulge that protrudes with exertion.  This typically causes only mild discomfort, unless it becomes acutely incarcerated with intestine, at which point it can be very painful, and associated with nausea, vomiting, and abdominal distention. 9 times out of 10, if someone has severe groin pain, it's not a hernia.

Swelling and pain: In general, lopsided groin swelling and pain with activity (especially lifting, staining, and coughing) are highly suggestive of a hernia.  You can have it on both sides too.  If your bowel is caught within the hernia, additional symptoms may include nausea, bloating or problem with bm.  If in doubt, please check in with your doctor.

Push it back: You have a defect in the fibromuscular wall of your abdominal cavity.  Your intestine is pushing its way into the opening and you can push it back inside.  Eventually you will need this fixed as there is a small risk of strangulation or twisting of the intestine doing this.  Surgery will close the defect and prevent the protrusion.

: Can cause usually local symptoms, but if incarcerated or strangulated, systematic malaise can be secondary causing diffuse weakness and ill sensations.  Likely your doctor should get involved.

YES: Anyone can have a groin hernia without a bulge.  The bulge is caused by the tissues coming through the hernia or defect in the wall.  If the hernia is small it may not have a bulge at all.  Some hernias are difficult to feel and require an ultrasound or  ct scan to diagnose.  Best to be evaluated by a surgeon ( someone who sees lots of hernias ) for acurate diagnosis.

No lower age limit: Groin hernia  in a baby has a potential complication of incarceration , surgery is advised as soon as it is detected. Talk to your pediatrician for referral to a ped. Surgeon.

Incarcerated?: The hernia could be "incarcerated" or trapped. If it becomes "strangulate, " he could require emergency surgery. He needs to have this checked out by a doctor asap.

Possibly: You can definitely wait as long as new symptoms do not develop such as pain, nausea, and most importantly if hernia can't be easily reduced. Usually smaller the hernia the higher the likelihood of hernia being strangulated which would require medical attention.
