No: When we perform flexible bronchoscopy we administer IV sedation and pain medications.  We also use local numbing agents to make the procedure more comfortable.  Despite taking multiple biopsies, almost all patient report no pain or discomfort.  In fact, they do not remember the procedure due to some of the anxiolytics that they  receive.  Some mild local throat irritation may occur for 24-48 hour.

Low risk: Bronchoscopy with biopsy is a very safe procedure with few complications. Bleeding is rare unless there are low platelets or the patient has been taking medications that reduce clotting. These types of medications should be stopped before the procedure. Occasionally a collapsed lung can occur; this is treated with a chest catheter in some circumstances.

can bronchoscopy use to get sample for lung biopsy?

Yes: If the goal is to get a biopsy of a possible "spot" on the lung and it is a short distance from the inside of your bronchus, it can be biopsied with the use of fluoroscopy and a bronchoscope which saves you from an open biopsy. If what is suspect is on the surface of the lung, you might require an open biopsy (surgery) or possibly a needle biopsy thru the chest wall.

how long does a kid stay typically inpatient after a lung biopsy during bronchoscopy for a trached 7yo? (crappy breathing, otherwise "ok")

Variable: A bronchoscopy with or without biopsy is fairly straightforward. The general description you've provided suggests a child that at baseline is chronically ill. Chances are the length of stay is more a matter of how long the child needs to recover from anesthesia in relation to baseline breathing challenges. Often this can be over night or it can be several days in a chronically ill child.

found 7mm bilobed peripheral nodule , what is bilobed ex heavy smoker .pulmonologist wants to do bronchoscopy with bal and biopsy  could it be cancer ?

See below: I think a biopsy of a 7mm nodule would be very difficult to hit.  Even using ENB and going right to the nodule, it would be difficult for a good sample at 7mm.  Usually 1cm is the cut off for biopsy using guidance.  I don't think it would be possible to biopsy something even 1cm without guidance unless you were just super lucky.

Second opinion: Bronchial brushing cytopathology and bronchoscopic biopsies are different and complementary techniques, so if one is negative the other can still be positive.  So it sounds as if you have cancer, i'm sorry to say.  It would make sense to ask for second opinions on the pathology and cytology to be sure. Don't drag this out--prompt treatment gives you a best chance for a good response & longer life.

body aches after ebus (bronchoscopy) 32 hours later. is this normal? hurts to cough too?

: The sedation may be associated with side effects within the first 48 hours. The other possible cause is an infection such as Influenza or 
COVID-19. The procedure may cause irritation of the upper airway. Drink warm fluids, monitor temperature and breathing. Discuss symptoms and testing recommended with the Pulmonologist.

chest xray showed something. ct scan clear. unable to do bronchoscopy today as i couldn't stop gagging. whats next? got to wait a week to see doctor

Don't give up: Clear ct scan (? Of the chest) is generally a good sign, assuming accurate interpretation.  Depending on what was scanned, looking at your neck and watching you swallow may be helpful as well.  Make sure you follow up with your doctor and do not stop until a solution is found.

can you be awake during bronchoscopy?

Accepted Answer

Yes: For most bronchoscopies we use "conscious sedation"; this means that you are comfortable for the procedure but not usually put to sleep/asleep.  The procedure should not be painful and should be comfortable.  You may have coughing during the procedure.
