have glossopharyngeal neuralgia on right side, bilateral palatal tremors, and nerve compression on mri, but my uvula deviates to side of lesion. why?

Glossopharyngeal : neuralgia is a rare condition that occurs in the areas innervated by the SENSORY branches of the glossopharyngeal (CN9) and vagus (CN10) nerves. You also have a motor component weakness, where uvula deviates toward strong side. Hope it makes sense.

hsv-1 in mouth and likely esophagus has therefore invaded the vagus and glossopharyngeal nerves causing dysautonomia. can hsv-1-killed nerves recover?

Complex, unusual: HSV can cause nerve-related symptoms, but usually doesn't destroy nerves, so I would expect recovery. However, this is an unusual and complex problem. Such extesnive HSV1 infections can occur in healthy persons, but mostly in the presence of immune deficiencies, especailly cancer chemotherapy, radiation, etc. You need specialty care, e.g. infectious diseases, neurology, and/or otolaryngology.

neck issues since 2 weeks.now having right side nerve pain from neck->tonsils->back of jaw->ear.but its continuous pain(burn) not electric shock.have mild issues with swollowing as well. can glossopharyngeal neuralgia be mild?or is it something else?

Multiple factors:: facial neuritis, TMJ issues, trigeminal neuragia/neuritis,You need a medical exam an nerve conduction studies. Cannot be diagnosed on this site.

It Depends: There are intimate connectivity between  the glossopharyngeal nerve and the vestibular cochlear nerve. Are there any associations between your neuralgia pain and your vertigo? Perhaps keeping a pain and vertigo diary might be useful.

my father aged 61 yrs is suffering from glossopharyngeal neuralgia since past 10 yrs. is there a permanent cure for this disorder?

Rare neuralgia: Control is often achieved via usage of meds used in epilepsy, and sodium channel inhibitors such as Carbamazepine and oxcarbazine may be useful.  Have had great success with Lyrica (pregabalin) or gralise.  There are some neurosurgical approaches that may be useful, and most of these are minimally invasive.  But need to make certain that there is not a presence of nasopharngeal cancer as cause.  See doctor.

i have palatal tremor and glossopharyngeal neuralgia since this summer. i've tried klonopin (clonazepam) no relief. might do botox, but doc wants me on snri. safe?

Carbamazepine: For cranial nerves neuralgia's  Carbamazepine or Oxcarbazepine are drugs of the 1st line. I am positive that your doctor knows your present condition, past medical history and your and considers risk/reward ration, but you can ask anyway. Snri is safe, but not used in neuralgia. Do not self medicate consult with your treating physician.

can nerve damage heal?

Yes: If the damage does not cause the nerve to be completely cut, then healing can occur. If a nerve has been cut, it will need to be reconnected in order to grow. Nerve grows about 1 mm/day, so depending on where the injury is, it may take over a year for recovery. It is difficult after a nerve is cut to get 100% recovery, but some return of sensation can be expected after repair.

No: If the nerve is simply bruised, then the nerve damage may improve with time alone. However, nerve lacerations or direct injuries often require surgical exploration and direct repair in a timely fashion. For chronic injuries, nerve grafts may be necessary.

Accepted Answer

Variable: Generically, if only the coverings of a nerve are involved (myelin), and healing begins, it will take about 4 weeks.  If the central portion of the nerve fibre is involved (axon), recovery is the speed of finger nail growth (.1 mm daily). Depends on location, causation, and whether successful treatment is available.
