BPD: Well we use more than just bpd to calculate the gestational age.  Head circ.,  femur length, and abdominal circ.  Also go into the calculation.  However, 4.1cm bpd is consistent with about 17 weeks 4 days.

bases on my lmp im 8 weeks. but gestational age was 9 weeks. why? did i ovulate sooner?

LMP &amp; ovulation: Ovulation can occur anywhere from 14 days to 21 days after the LMP dependent upon the length of your menstrual cycle. When pregnancies are computed we use the LMP as an ESTIMATE to standardize the pregnancy length which is accurate to only Plus or minus 10 to 14 days. In other words, trying to backdate ovulation after pregnancy is difficult and is only a "guesstimate".

Varies : The bleeding associated with a miscarriage is going to vary widely from person-to-person. There is simply no way to know how long it will take to pass all of the tissue. In some cases surgery will be required.

Yes and no: Yes, if the gestational dates are off. No, if they are not and the biparietal diameter of the fetus does not "measure up" to the appropriate age indicating "small for gestational age or intrauterine growth retardation.".

: Doctors generally try to save all pregnancies that parents want to save and that don't have major fetal defects. Nowadays, if born at 24 weeks, about 2/3 survive; and about 1/3 of the survivors do well without problems. That means at 24 weeks, about 22% do well, 45% survive but have problems, and 33% don't survive. The odds get better every week, so the goal usually is to stay inside Mom longer.

Approximate: Ultrasounds are + or - 4 days. Pregnancy window is about 48 to 72 hours. So approximately nov 1st?

Accepted Answer

Precision: By convention gestational age is stated in weeks.  For precision and accuracy weeks and days are usually indicated when specifying a gestational age.  For example, some tests may be done at 15 weeks but not at 14 weeks and 6 days - so the number of days is important as well.

Depends: Very early fetuses (6-10 wks) show minimal variations in size so sonos done in 1st trimester are very accurate for dates. Mid and especially late trimester sonos display much more uncertainty dues to differences in fetal growth and can be off by 2 or more weeks when used as the first sono to estimate dates. When did you have yours done?

No: If i understand you correctly, your actual LMP (10/1) and your estimated LMP based on the measurements of the fetus during ultrasound (9/27) are very consistent. You could not have conceived on 9/25.  It would have happened about two and a half weeks later.

Gestational Age: In cases where the date of conception is known precisely, such as with in vitro fertilization, the EDD is calculated by adding 266 days to the date of conception. Ultrasound uses the size of the fetus to determine the gestational age or you can calculate it using the time elapsed since the the first day of the last menstrual period.
