A member asked:

Is the gestational age of a fetus measured by how big it is?if so, can't some fetuses be bigger than others which can cause due dates to be off?

Depends: Very early fetuses (6-10 wks) show minimal variations in size so sonos done in 1st trimester are very accurate for dates. Mid and especially late trimester sonos display much more uncertainty dues to differences in fetal growth and can be off by 2 or more weeks when used as the first sono to estimate dates. When did you have yours done?

Yes. : Ultrasound measurements of the fetus to determine gestational age are always reported as a range, which can be as much as 3 weeks late in pregnancy.
