Waht?: Can you get gential herpes through a mouth ulcer? Or is a mouth ulcer caused by gential herpes? If you already have gential herpes, on the gentials, the mouth ulcers are not casued by gential herpes. If you have not had gential herpes no ulcer is required to get them. Simply mucosal membrane to same contact - anywhere. Most people infected do not exhibit symptoms and are only contagious when have.

Recurrent blisters: Happen with herpes in most cases, if no active lesions it is more difficult to say.   Blood tests can show new or previous exposure.
HSV Type 1 lesions are usually less severe, (cold sores), very common. HSV Type 2 lesions are more severe and numerous, particularly with first outbreak.  Anti viral medication can help decrease recurrences.

: Herpes virus can be shedded even without eruptions being present. It is spread by skin to skin contact and if live virus was on the straw the virus can be transmitted. However I don't think It's a very likely occurrence.

About herpes: If a patient sees no lesions, it is hard to guess whether or not any symptoms are from herpes. One's doctor can help by doing blood tests for herpes antibodies. If symptoms are happening often, perhaps a trial of preventive medication can be done if the blood antibodies are positive for herpes. The partner's antibodies should be checked too, because one typically only catches herpes from a person.

Epstein-barr & cytomegalovirus, roseola virus, & cause of kaposi's sarcoma are all herpes viruses.

Painful ulcers: Genital herpes is a viral infection that most commonly presents w/ painful sores or ulcers in the  genital area (boxer short distribution).  Outbreak can start as pain & itching.  There may be small red bumps or tiny white blisters. Some pts have pain w/ urinating, recurrent vaginal irritation, painful lymph nodes in groin, pain down leg. Inital outbreak may feel like flu. Sometimes no symptoms.

Not usually: Herpes simplex  when sexually transmitted to an otherwise healthy adult usually manifests as a group of burning or painful blisters.  The problem in these individuals is the high potential for reccurrence and it's contagious nature. 
Herpes simplex infections in those with a poor or compromised immune system  such as aids or neonates on the other hand can be very serious.
