Meds and diet: There are a handful of medications that work well for generalized seizures.  These are generally started one at a time, but sometimes multiple meds are required to control seizures.  There are also other therapies, including the ketogenic diet, which is a high fat, low carbohydrate and adequate protein diet.  There are other dietary therapies such as the modified atkins diet.

Siezures: Some signs are confusion, difficulty thinking or speaking, loss of postural tone (falling), involuntary movements of the limbs and/or shaking, loss of bladder or bowel control, staromg  and stopping an activity,  loss of consciousness.  Some may experience afeeling of time lost (absence seizure), a sense of being familiar in a strange place.

Clarify term, thanks: Mini seizure is not a clinical term.  I'm not certain if you mean complex partial seizures.  In these seizures, patients appear to "zone out", where they are unarousable.  They may have some "clicking" but are not aware and not able to talk.  Unlike a grand mal seizure, there is no shaking of the arms and legs and foaming of the mouth.

Many things: Seizures in children can be caused by fever, by genetic causes of epilepsy, by metabolic derangements during illness, and by structural lesions in the brain.  Therefore a full workup is indicated in any child who has a first seizure.

It's not: Brain tumors can present with many problems, seizures being one.  We are often taught that if a seizure is the first symptom a patient has that leads to the diagnosis of a brain tumor, that they will likely have a more favorable outcome.  There are a multitude of "gliomas" - some are relatively benign and slow growing, and those are the ones in which seizure can be the first sign.

Once pvl is discovered, the risk of subsequent seizures is about 20%.

Risk factors: There are no warnings for a first time seizure. There are risk factors: difficult or complicated maternal labor, low apgar scores at birth, febrile seizures as a child, meningitis, encephalitis, head injury with loss of consciousness or loss of memory to name a few.  Auras are commonly viewed as a warning that a seizure is about to happen. In fact they are actually simple partial seizures.
