Abilify (aripiprazole) : Abilify is a brand name for the drug aripiprazole.  Aripiprazole is part of a family (or class) of drugs called atypical antipsychotics.  These drugs are used to help people with a variety of conditions including schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, and bipolar i disorder.

The package insert for Abilify indicates that it is to be "used with caution in patients with a history of seizures...."

seizures are not among the common adverse effects of the medication. However, a drug of the same class, clozapine, was found to increase risk of seizures.  A small number of case reports have been published that describe seizures in patients taking aripiprazole.

Yes: Colonoscopy is an important medical condition that saves many lives.  People with seizures who take anti seizure medicine can undergo colonoscopy.  Make sure your doctor knows all the medications you take.  You should not miss any of your anti seizure medications the night before or the day of your procedure, even if you have been told not to take anything by mouth.

Possibly: It depends on the nature of the overdoses and what the medications are. If there are sequelae from the overdose such as hypotension or hypoxia, that can lead to adverse long-term effects on the brain. On the other hand it is also important to control the seizures. It is well known that constant seizures lead to damaging effects.

Avoid triggers: Several provocateurs include medications, recreational drugs, stressors, infections, chemical and metabolic imbalances, alcohol  abuses.  So, handle these if present.  Might consider switching a different med.  A vagal nerve stimulator helps very well in many.

The potential for: a drug combination to cause seizures does  not mean that they will cause seizures.  Other things are factored in - such as your age, if there is pulmonary or renal disease, if there  is pre-existing seizure disorder. Rarely: Most people are able to continue on a stable medication regimen for many years (=decades). Rarely, a medication will seem to lose its effectiveness and need switched. Ask your doctor.

Dose: If dose plus missed generally better to skip and take next scheduled dose

Potential risk: If your friend is a adolescent, perhaps has petit male, but if older, likely complex partial seizures which can generalize and cause grand MAP convulsion.  If not under control, should have meds re-adjusted or changed, and if 3 meds tried and failed, consider a vagal nerve stimulator or even surgery.  This is very complex and an epilepsy specialist can guide future intervention.
