i had gastric bypass 2 years ago. i'm having horrible gas problems. i started taking active charcoal pills,  am i harming myself?

No: You won't harm yourself with charcoal.  The gas may be because you're unable to break down wheat.  Try eliminating it completely ... Be careful to read food labels, as many foods may have wheat/wheat products ... That you might never consider.  Another possibility is overgrowth of "bad" bacteria in the intestine; ask your doctor to prescribe Flagyl 500 mg 3x/day for 14 days.  Good health!

Gastric bypass: After having gastric bypass surgery it is important to stay on the recommended diet and not vary from it.  This can cause gas, and other problems.  Also drink plenty of water or healthy fluids to stay adequately hydrated.  If you do both of these and still have problems then follow with your surgeon.

every time we have sex, my girlfriend gets severe gas pains!  why? she's 41 & has not had any kids.  she used to be overweight before her gastric bypass!

I : I am concerned because what she is perceiving as gas pains may actually be pelvic pain. First, i recommend she see her general practioner or gynceologist for a complete history, pelvic exam, and whatever diagnostic test that is deemed necessary. 
On the other hand, if she eats certain types of food prior to intercourse that cause gas, this could be the issue. There are too many foods to list, this will require some investigating on her part.
Regardless she should have this issue addressed by a medical professional.

i had gastric bypass surgery 3 days ago now i am having some pain in my right upper chest.could thi be gas or should i worry about a pe? no leg pain

Yes, it's possible!: Your chest pain can be from any of the following causes: PE, heart attack, heartburn, ulcer, pneumonia, pneumothorax, medication reaction, or other causes.

You should call your surgeon ASAP for immediate consultation.

If they are unavailable then go to ER immediately for evaluation for possible PE or other causes.

Have surgeon eval. : Technically, it would be helpful to know the exact operation you had, but I wouldn't think you should be experiencing these symptoms. Assuming you're following the appropriate post-operative diet recommendations. Visit your surgeon for an evaluation.

Dumping syndrome: One of the most common adverse effects for gastric bypass (i presume it was not a simpler banding procedure) is rapid transit of food through the small, then large intestine, leading to abdominal cramps/diarrhea.  The pattern of moving bowels regularly first thing in morning, especially after coffee, is common. But after bypass, anatomical and physiological changes occur. Must be followed by doc.

Period of Adjustment: Gastric bypass works for two reasons: it physically shrinks the size of the stomach; and it causes malabsorption.  One of the signs of malabsorption can be diarrhea. Most often this is caused by a decreased ability to absorb fats. Over time, the guts adjust. The most important thing is that you remain hydrated. I encourage you to ask your physician for advice. They know better.

Dark urine: How soon after gastric bypass?  Either way, it sounds like you are dehydrated and may also have a urinary tract infection. Liver problems can also make your urine dark as well. You need to see a doctor asap.

diagnosed me with bile induced gastritis. wants to do a gastric bypass. in my 40's,(5'4", 203), but isn't there a less invasive answer?

Options: Probably theist popular weight loss operation at the moment is a sleeve gastrectomy. Its not really less invasive, but has less potential for long term side effects. There are also some newer endoscopic therapies, but they are not so effective. Ask your doctor if a consultation with a Bariatric surgeon is appropriate. Hope this helps!
