Could be apnea: In general, snoring or apnea may improve based on sleep position if mild, but moderate to severe apnea will occur in any sleeping position. Other conditions can lead to nocturnal shortness of breath. Heart failure or asthma are examples.

OSA: If you wake up gasping for air, you probably have obstructive sleep apnea.  As you fall asleep and relax completely the tissue in your airway collapses and blocks the airway.  You might try sleeping on your side or stomach until you can see a sleep physician and be tested.
