: The sweats are clues. You may be experiencing a viral upper respiratory tract infection. Have you had a recent head cold which has now migrated down to your tracheobronchial tree?  Any fever? Is the phlegm discolored? If so this may be bacterial at this time requiring antibiotics. Drink plenty of fluids,continue expectorants&amp; see your physician if you're not improving.

No: No problem with that.  What you want to avoid is taking antibiotics without seeing a doctor.  Unfortunately, antibiotics are widely available in india without a prescription, and are often given to patients by pharmacists.  Make sure your cough medicine does not contain an antibiotic.

When your lungs heal to the point this is no longer needed it will stop, which can take a couple months. Stay hydrated, rested &amp; well fed and you are doing the best to support natural healing.
