Probably not: A search of the medical literature (on www.Pubmed.Gov) shows no data or studies that would suggest this is true (even if it might be theoretically).

Tapering off meds: I would consult with a psychiatrist/addiction specialist who can provide a specific plan for tapering off those medications as well as determine for you specifically whether it would be recommended to do so within the course of a month. It can be rather uncomfortable to come off those medications if the taper is done too quickly.

Accepted Answer

Usually quick: Gabapentin is one of the least likely drugs to have withdrawal symptoms, and if you do have withdrawal, it is usually over very quickly.  If you went from 600mg/day to zero, you could go down to 300mg/day for a couple of days and then stop, or even go smaller to 100mg/day for a couple of days.  This downward titration would help with withdrawal.

You don't say what: you are on it for, unless it is being prescribed off-label for headache, or to augment your antidepressant. Neither of these purposes are indications for gabapentin.  In general, withdrawal symptoms are mild and few and far between, but I ALWAYS recommend tapering off any anticonvulsant medication, and NEVER stopping them suddenly unless there is a severe side effect.

Not likely: but I always recommend tapering gabapentin. if you are on 300 mg per day (100 mg three times a day), I would talk to the prescribing doctor about reducing it to 100 mg twice a day for a week or so, then 100 mg a day for a week and then stop.  However, at your dose, even if you stopped completely all at once, it is unlikely to produce serious withdrawal symptoms or signs.

Slower taper: If you've been on a medicine that long, you won't be able to taper it down quickly.  Talk to your doctor about slower tapering regimens - ex. Alternating 1200, 900 every other day, or splitting tabs so you're getting 1050 for a few weeks.  But be sure to let your doctor know you're about the difficulty tapering!

Not first choice but: Gabapentin has no cross-tolerance with benzodiazepines, so would probably not be first choice for xanax (alprazolam) withdrawal.  However, there is at least one case report of using this for xanax (alprazolam) withdrawal -- successful results.  As an anticonvulsant it might be effective when other options fail or are unwise. i need to taper off of 300mg neurontin (gabapentin).i have been on this for 4 months. i want to taper without having bad withdrawal symptoms. i need a plan?

Neurontin (gabapentin): Check with your physician who prescribes the medication. He should be able to sketch a plan on how to wean of the medication. If no epilepsy or seizures the risk of withdrawals are almost no existent with this medication. Please recheck with your physician on this issue.

Gabapentin: Your dose of gabapentin (Neurontin) is low and tapering should not be necessary. However, gabapentin does come in a 100 mg tablet if your doctor suggests a tapering schedule. Before you change the dosage or frequency of any medication please check with the prescribing physician
