Possible: And probably you were previously exposed without knowing, or you happen to be allergic to something that cross-reacts with the same nut in suspicion. At times you can have the reaction without any stimulus. At any rate, given your history, it's worth keeping epinephrine pen and antihistamines handy, and see an allergist,  check aaaai.org or acaai.org for an allergist in your area, good luck

i just finished a round of steroids after developing full body hives from augmentin. i'm still itchy - is this normal?

Hives can itch!: Yes - hopefully the steroids relieved the worst part of the symptoms. You can take antihistamines like Benadryl to help. Taking Pepcid also may help (It's another kind of antihistamine). You should AVOID heat - like hot showers etc, that will make the itching worse. If you think the hives are coming back - you need urgent care. Hopefully your steroid dose was enough. Call doc for any concerns.

should a child who reacted to blueberry with full-body hives and swollen lips carry an epipen (epinephrine)? blueberries seem easy enough to avoid.

Yes: It is probably in your child's best interest to have an epipen (epinephrine) available.  You never know what could be the next food to precipitate an allergic reaction.  You would not want to be without that protection should an allergic reaction be severe and life-threatening.  Yes it is easy to avoid blueberries, but similar foods could cause the same reaction.

Seems like..: You are having a progressively worsening allergic reaction....  Please seek direct medical attention ASAP!

two year old male had reacted to amoxicillan with full body hives, fever and joint pain (back, knees and feet). he is in day 11.  bloodwork came back negative except for severe inflammation.  fever ranges from 109-103.8.  ibuprofen was effective?

Allergy: From the description may have been a penicillin allergy.  Contact dr to test for penicillin allery before you use penicillin again

i broke out in full body/face hives after taking augmentin. they prescribed me prednisone but my hives are only getting worse. its only been two days on the medication but when am i likely to see improvement and when should i get concerned?

: I would discuss with the Dr who saw you and knows you. Trust you had good reason to get Augmentin  Review other possible causes of hives.

Hives: If it recurs and you don't have any problems breathing, stomach pain or nauseat, vomitting, you can take otc zyrtec, Claritin (loratadine) or Allegra once to twice a day to control your symptoms. If it lasts more than 6 weeks, you should seek medical advice from a specialist. Most of the time acute hives are benign.

Larger dose: Try a non-sedating antihistamine up to 4 x daily ( yes much larger than what is used for hay fever).  If this does not help. you may add a H2 antagonist such as Pepcid (famotidine) or ranitidine twice daily.  If this happens only at home or at school, then there is something in that environment causing the hives. Consult an allergist if the above measures didn't help.
