Pupil dilation: I offer reversal pupillary dilation drops called dapriazole, which lessen the duration of dilation by about 4 hours. Of course it depends on which dilating eye drops the doctor is instilling.

It varies.: It generally takes roughly 3 to 4 hours where the patient is blurred for reading but generally can still see well at distance. Optic Neuritis: Optic neuritis is a condition which is caused by an autoimmune injury to the optic nerve.  This produces loss of the fatty insulation ("myelin") around the nerve which makes the nerve not function well.  Patients have vision changes (esp. loss of color and brightness sensation), a change in pupil function, and frequently pain with eye movement.  MS is usually diagnosed by MRI or a spinal tap.

had a dilated retina exam and oct 6 hrs ago.all healthy. but im noticing intermittent flickering in my left eye sort of like the shimmering after cataractsurgery. is this a possible side effect from the numbing and dilation drops? pupil still huge?

Probably not: You may be thinking of some other drugs which dilate the pupils. Xanax (alprazolam) is a sedative and as such can give a signal to small automatic muscles to relax. But xanax (alprazolam) also happens to have a small adrenaline signal which works to constrict small muscles. In an overdose there would be more sedation than activation, possible dilated pupils and they may appear drunk. This is an life threatening emergency.
