just did my first dose of fragmin injection. is it normal for it to sting and cause severe stomach pain?

: Any injection can sting. Fragmin is meant to be injected under the skin but yours may have hit a muscle or nerve assuming you received the injection in the abdomen. Expect some tenderness &amp; bruising at the injection site. Get examined if symptoms don't resolve quickly.

Bruise: Seem bigger than expected
check needle size, volume injected and talk with doc about possible overdosing.
While a goal of anti coagulation is important, local bleeding is uncomfortable and a possible sign of need for adjustment.

Ice may help earl, and heat later to limit bruise and resorb hematoma.

i started fragmin on friday and now im feeling nauseous, dizzy, tired, have headaches and minor bruising around the injection sites with stomach pain. is this normal? what should i do? im doing injections twice a day?

: Those are know side effects of fragmin, from common (bruise at injection site) to uncommon (headache, dizziness, etc.). Discuss with your doctor if the uncommon systemic symptoms (headache, dizziness, stomach pain ...) becomes intolerable. Good luck.

Anticoagulant: Frag in is derived from heparin, a naturally occurring anticoagulant. It is not usually given chronically since oral anticoagulants are easier and cheaper, but there are exceptions such as pregnancy, in some cancer patients, and where oral agents failed.  Fragmin (dalteparin) is often used temporarily to prevent clotting or initiate treatment of a blood clot.  Long term use can cause osteoporosis.

See you doctor: Fragmin (dalteparin) is a low molecular weight heparin and a Category B drug for pregnancy. This means animal studies have not seen harm to the fetus but there are no adequate studies in pregnant women. Some women with blood clotting problems can take these medications safely during pregnancy BUT they should be followed very closely by their physician.

Fragmin (dalteparin): Fragmin (dalteparin) is given by injection. I doubt you'd want to take it for the rest of your life. It's also very expensive. (1 vial is $730).

how would fragmin (dalteparin) encourage osteoporosis if taken for no more than one year? is this of high concern? can it be prevented?

Not of high concern: There are studies suggesting low molecular weight heparins cause osteoporosis.  The risk is so low (one figure cites 0.91%) that porphylaxis with osteoporsis meds has not been proposed.
