i have a fractured hand, and it's very swollen. will i have to wait swelling to subside before i get a cast?

Accepted Answer

No: You can still get a cast, but the cast may have to be split in order to allow for further swelling. Also, once you get the cast and your swelling goes down, you will likely require a cast change to a more snug cast because the cast will get loose as your swelling goes down.

Accepted Answer

Everyone's different: Swelling can persist even after cast removal.  Your time course was relatively short and continued swelling could indicate that you have not completely healed.  It could also be as simple as your body's natural reaction to trauma.  If you have pain as well or if you are concerned, speak to the doctor treating your fracture.

is it normal for the wrist to be swollen one month after removing a cast (after a fracture)? how long before the swelling and pain subside?

Accepted Answer

Gradually subside: If you have been immobilized in a cast for
awhile for a fracture, you will potentially need
some therapy to return to normal.
You may need to get treatment to regain your
normal motion, strength, and yes to decrease
some of the residual swelling. 
Typically 4-6 weeks would be an estimate, 
but heat, humidity, activity and other medical problems would be factors.

i had an x-ray of wrist, elbow and forearm 9 days after injury and no evidence of fracture. i have tingling numbness and swelling in fingers and can move them but not bend or grasp fully without pain. could it be a hand fracture or a sress fracture?

: By 9 days after an injury any bone fracture would be more evident on x-rays from early changes at the fracture site. The symptoms sound more like nerve entrapment/dysfunction and soft tissue injury. A re-visit or visit with a sports medicine or orthopedic doc would be my next move.

ORTHO HAND DOC: You need an ortho hand doctor consult. Repeat X-rays and discussion of treatment options Ie hand cast vs surgery

See below: Swelling right after surgery can be normal in the short term, but you may need to follow up with your surgeon to make sure you are healing properly and don't have an infection.
