i have foot pain on the lateral side of my foot around the fourth and fifth metatarsals when i'm pushing off. walking barefoot or on flip flops relieves it while wearing sneakers aggravates it. could it be some kind of neuroma or stress fracture?

Yes: It could be either that you describe.  You should have it examined and probably have an x-ray taken to rule out fracture.

The : The most likely diagnosis is plantar faciitis.  Splinting, orthotics and antiinflammatories will help but examination is important.

See a doctor: Trauma can result in contusion ( bruise) or fracture. You will need to see a doctor to determine the nature of the injury. An x ray may be needed to diagnose a fracture.

Plantar Fascitis: A band of tissue on the bottom of the foot that attaches from the heel bone all the way to your toes. It is short at rest and suddenly stretched when you put weight on it. It causes inflammation and does not easily go away without treatment. See a podiatrist to get help and relief. That is generally the most common reason for your particular complaint.

Stretch and massage: Consider massaging the arch and heel. Stretching the foot by pulling toes toward you can also help relieve tension on the plantar fascia ligament on the bottom of your feet.
I would also recommend proper arch supports in your shoes.

Strained arch.: Plantar foot pain, generally , can arose from 3 areas. The ball, the arch or the heel. The arch has the largest surface area, and it's no surprise that it is also the area the patients complain about most. You symptoms are more than likely due to a strain on the soft tissue structures in the arch, namely the fascia. Since it is on both heels it is probably due to your shoes. Start with the shoes.

Barefoot: It depends on what the pain is and how it happened while you were bare foot. If you are morbidly obese walking around bare foot you may develope heel pain or a neuroma. Need more info.
