See a podiatrist: Need to be evaluated for any broken bones. Since feet do not have much muscle for protection, they can break. Please see a podiatrist to for x-rays to make sure there is no fracture. Meanwhile ice your foot and elevate it as much as possible.

A lot of things: This situation is common and could be due to a variety of things.  These include a contusion, which is bruise; stress reaction or even a stress fracture, due to over-activity; metarsalgia, which is pain due to excess weight-bearing under a metatarsal head; a neuroma, which is an inflammed ; tendonitis, etc.  If the pain is not getting better he should see an orthopaedist or podiatrist.

Pain with walking: Pain in ball of foot can range from capsulitis, stress fracture, neuroma and a whole host of other issues.  Pain on side of foot falls into the same category.  In order to truly evaluate a podiatrist needs to have a thorough history and do a physical exam, including xrays.

Not very much...: Support is more important. Most shoes aren't always what is bad, usually it's the crummy insoles they come with! there are many possibe reasons (plantar fascitis leaps to mind) that you may have pain in the heels, but try arch supports like spenco polysorb insoles  (http://www.Spenco.Com/products/footcare/poly-sorb) and otc anti-inflammatories (like aleve).  If these don't help, see a podiatrist.

Heel pain: People usually describe pain in 1 of 2 places as "heel pain". Pain  on the bottom may be plantar fasciitis (www.Drmarkgalland.Com 1/16/13), while pain on the back may be achilles tendonitis. As for the pain that spreads into the top of your foot, this may be a separate issue (tendonitis, stress fract), or something that has developed if the heel pain has changed your foot mechanics during activity.

No, not normal at --: all. If symptoms are improving then I would not worry, if not, then I would have it seen to by an Orthopod with Xrays and treatment, as necessary started.
