Should get examined: 2 mm thickness sounds like a significant change. Are you having pain? Do you have a condition that can cause or worsen foot pad atrophy, like severe obesity, rheumatoid arthritis, high arched feet, diabetes with neuropathy, Morton's neuroma treated with local steroid injections? You should get this examined to assess your risks and treatment options.

my left big toe is 0.5-1cm skinnier than my right big toe, in the fat pad(?) area. it's been stable for 3 months, but i'm concerned it's atrophy. i have no other symptoms. i also passed a neuro exam, but she didn't look at my feet. concerning?

Well below norm: A heel fat pad thickness by ultrasound of 3 mm is two standard deviations below the average normal for adults.  This means that 2 mm is thinner than 95% of the average, healthy adult population.  Severity is related to clinical symptoms such as pain and/or neuropathy.

As 1 ages they do: loose substance in the heel fat pad, normal will vary from person 2 person.

Possibly: As this benign condition is due to small amounts of fat pushing the one of the deeper skin layers known as the dermis, resultant atrophy might be a possible effect.

Steroids that are applied topically or injected into affected areas is a common treatment. But this may not be indicated if atrophy is present.  A dermatologist should be consulted.

Neurologist: Atrophy in an extremity definitely needs to be investigated. The best person to see is a neurologist. I wouldn't think that ALS is the top diagnosis. Getting some answers will certainly help. Good luck.

currently taking celebrex for tarsal tunnel and plantar fasciitis. had tts for 9 months. bottom of feet muscle are weak and atrophied. can pt help?

Yes if you haven't : There are a variety of physical measures that you can use. Physical therapy is one of the best things you can do in this setting especially since you've lost muscle. It would be better to start it before you lose muscle

injury to r foot 6m ago.  disuse atrophy to lower leg.  muscle twitching along inner aspect of foot, now up to inside of leg to calf.  suggestions?

If the disuse: Is secondary to cast you may have nerve damage from the cast. I would recommend physical therapy. You must get that foot and leg moving. You may want to get a baseline EMG/NCV study and of course follow up with your doctor.

just got out of cam walker for lat.malleolus frac. but the medial side of my foot is what really hurts.it's swollen. is  just bc of atrophy of muscle?

?: Many times in a fx such as ur's a medial ligament tear goes undiagnosed soooo u need a 2nd opinion from an ankle specialist. A tear may have been overlooked. Depends upon if this is the case & if 2 long since injury a primary repair may not b an option but if u r 2 far out, a reconstruction will b required. Seak out a good ankle surgeon, orthopedic.
