A few things to...: Keeping ideal body weight, eat healthy/no added salt, aerobic exercise regularly 4-5x/wk, reduce daily stresses, sleep well, and don't smoke etc..These are so called modifiable risk factor--you can't change genetic. Look up the dash-diet regimen (google it). Treat medical condition (chol, diabetes etc) well.If these fail to adequately lower your  BP to less than 140/90, consult your doc..Good luck.

Food for HTN: Great question: optimal diet is DASH Diet:  low salt, low saturated fat, low cholesterol, 8 servings of colored fruit and vegetables daily, pomegranates, tomato, kiwi, spinach, kale, whole grains and low animal protein (4 - 5 oz per day of very lean meat, fish, poultry only). Don't smoke. Drink 3 liters fluid per day. Minimize caffeine.  Look up DASH Diet.

Salt: Salt does cause fluid retention and therefore increases blood pressure.  Very low blood sugar can cause release of adrenaline which raises blood pressure, other than that, I do not know of any interaction with particular foods.

An easy rule of thumb is to avoid processed foods or eating out, eat several servings of fruit and vegetables daily, and never add salt to pre-prepared food. When cooking from scratch, it is ok to add salt as a seasoning.
