Absolutely!: Folliculitis is an infection of the hair follicles. It is a common problem and usually treated with good skin care, and soap and water. However sometimes it needs either topical or systemic antibiotics. Some infections can be fairly serious, so if it progresses, or you start having things like fever, get seen right away.

Dermatology referral: The proper treatment for your folliculitis depends on the type and severity of your condition. Creams or pills are used to control bacterial infections. Creams, shampoos or pills are used to fight fungal infections. Light therapy with a medicated cream and laser hair removal are also treatment options for some cases. I highly suggest you make an appointment to see a Dermatologist.

Antibiotics: Most of time, dermatologists would use oral doxycycline. Others include minocycline, Clindamycin or sulfa-drugs. Topicals would help but less effective. You'd better let dermatologists handle it instead of doing it yourself.

No antifungal.: Folliculitis on the buttocks is usually caused by a superficial bacterial infection.  Therefore, antifungals are not usually effective for folliculitis. A topical antibiotic such as prescription Clindamycin is my treatment of choice for folliculitis.

: It could be. If it is, applying warm compresses for 10 minutes,pat dry,apply antibacterial ointment a few times a day. Observe for pain,tenderness, swelling or increasing redness which would be seen in spreading infection and warrants a trip to your MD or a clinic.
