after a head injury to a two year old, how do you know if your child's nose is running or if its the clear fluid  that your told to watch for?

It's tricky: The clear fluid you are talking about is cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) presumably leaking from the cribiform plate (were the nerves involved in smell are located).  The fluid can be sent to the lab for analysis, but in general, if the CSF leak is significant, the patient has other symptoms like headache and anosmia (can't smell).  This is tough to tell in a young child.  If concerned, see your doctor.

It : It is possible but unlikely, that the head injury has anything to do with infertility.  The best test is for him to check his sperm count.  This really shouldn't be very expensive but would answer a lot of your questions.  Best wishes.

More detail: Tough to answer w/o more details. A nose bleed after a head injury is not especially unusual, and may indicate a skull fracture or CSF leak. CSF is usually thin and watery, but can be blood tinged too. If the bleeding persists beyond an hour or so, call your doc or seek out an ER.
Are there any other symptoms? If so, you might want to go sooner (bad headache, nausea, loss of consciousness...)

Nasal discharge: A foreign body, a deviated septum or hay fever could cause your nasal discharge. See an ENT doctor for evaluation.

Nasal discharge: With this history I would advise you to immediately seek medical attention preferably through an emergency department. Your history of head trauma, leakage of fluid with probable contamination could mean there is injury to the brain.

Do : Do not know about the actual type of injury. We already know that you have not had headaches, vomiting, loss of consciousness, amnesia or pupillary changes. Additional symptoms can include:  nausea, ringing in your ears, feeling dizzy, slurred speech, confusion or feeling tired. Major concern is that you have felt woozy.  The symptoms from a head injury can be subtle. I am not sure what to make of the blood in your nose - don't know the mechanism of injury.   If you continue to be woozy, i would recommend a check up.   Because not all the effects from a concussion may be immediate, self- monitor to ensure that you don't develop more symptoms.  If there is a small amount of blood in your nostril  and it is not on- going, it will likely resolve. Be gentle with yourself. Be self aware for signs or symptoms of a concussion.
