i have been having allergies really bad this week. i have been taking zyrtec and mucinex d since last sunday. friday i added generic flonase. i have not had any fever at all.  yesterday afternoon i noticed a loss of smell. i know there are reports of others saying theyve lost smell and taste while on flonase. i also know that is a symptom of covid. from what ive read and heard, if this was covid id feel a lot worse and have fever.  what are your thoughts?

i have hearing loss in my left ear.i am on prednisone since monday. i had a cold a month ago and took amoxicillin but my hearing has been decreased. i am also taking flonase & zyrtec. how long till the predisone works is there anything else i can do?

Hearing loss: If your hearing has not improved after the medication, I would suggest that a work up for inflammatory hearing loss be pursued. The prednisone should work almost immediately. If your symptoms persist, I recommend seeing a rheumatologist. I would be happy to do a consult if you desire.

No: Flonase is still a prescription. However Nasacort (triamcinolone) AQ is a similar medicine that is available OTC.

Flonase: Flonase usually well tolerated.  Most common problem is epistaxis affecting 10 percent of users.  Other common sided effects include nasal mucosal erythema or ulcer, nasal septal erthema/ulceration, nasopharyngitis, nasal dryness or candidiasis or nose or throat.

Don't know: I couldn't even find flonaseql with google. I presume that they have the same ingredients but different delivery systems. However this is just a guess.

Not really but...: Flonase (fluticasone) is a topical corticosteroid sprayed in the nose to reduce inflammation from allergies. The medicine is absorbed readily into tissues and hair-like projections (called cilia) on cells help spread the medicine towards the back (so no need to "snort" after spraying). Sometimes if there is too much drainage or mucus, it may help to blow your nose or use saline prior to spraying.

Depends: How big an overdose?  If its just a few extra sprays a few times, likely nothing will happen.  If it is many sprays a day over months or years, you run the low risk of systemic absorption and typical steroid side effects.  This can include secondary infection, weight gain, cataracts, liver changes, osteoporosis etc.  This would be rare and require a massive overdose.

Many: Flonase is a nasal steroid spray used to treat allergic rhinitis.  It will be going non-prescription this spring.  The alternatives include over the counter Nasacort Allergy 24HR or prescription Rhinocort, Veramyst, Qnasl, Zetonna, Omnaris or Nasonex (mometasone).

No: Flonase is a type of intranasal topical steroid spray. It's very effective and safe in dealing with the symptoms of rhinitis, but has a different mechanism of action.
