Common: Depending on the kind of surgery you had, they are common or less common.  Following scleral buckling surgery and pneumatic retinopexy ("bubble procedure"), they are common.  Following a vitrectomy surgery, there should not be any floaters, in most cases.

Get evaluated: You are a boxer and have had a detachment, presumably from trauma.  Floaters are common but can be a serious warning in an eye that has already had a detachment (at a young age).  Immediately get an appointment with the retinal doctor that re-attached your retina.

Not likely: Retinal detachment usually occurs rapidly (hours to days) and would cause significant vision loss. Although floaters can be a harbinger sign of retinal detachment, as long as there has not been any vision changes it is unlikely that these floaters are related.  You should have a dilated eye examination to be sure.  See an eye doctor soon.

No substance : Can prevent  a retinal detachment. You need to treat the underlying cause diabetic retinopathy for example. I have had patients who have taken homeopathic remedies for floaters , but guess what! , on exam they were still present.

i have a posterior vitreous detachment.  will the floaters/blurriness improve with time?  what is the likelihood of it becoming a retinal detachment?

Floaters: Most common it is recommended to have an immediate exam when they first occur to rule out retinal detachment.  Wait a year and if they are still symptomatic then consider a vitrectomy to remove the vitreous and floaters.  Most cases the floaters and blurriness will clear. Pvd is typically the cause of a retinal detachment, but the chance is about 1 in 5000.

Possibly: Get a dilated eye exam immediately by an eye doctor (a retina specialist if you can). Get a move on.

Unlikely : Floaters in the eye have several causes.  The most common cause is degeneration of the vitreous fluid.  The floaters gradually get worse, and persist.  Sudden increase in floaters may be caused by vitreous separation (detachment) and may associated with a retinal tear or detachment, and eye exam is advisable.  In both of these situations, the floaters persist.

Not necessarily: In most cases, eye floaters are due to the natural process of the gel-like substance in your eye losing some of its clarity. However, the gel can pull and tug on the retina and can cause a retinal tear or detachment during the process. The chances are small but it's still possible. Get a dilated eye exam, if you have new floaters, flashing lights, or a dark curtain coming over your vision.

in high young myopes, is there a chance of retinal detachment long after pvd is over?do we have to live with floaters/flashes with the fear of rd

Accepted Answer

Unfortunately yes: If you make it through your PVD without an rd, your risk becomes less. The flashes stop when PVD is completed. You may still have lattice retinal degeneration and corresponding risk of rd. Trauma and other causes initiate rd more often in high myopes. You can have preventative laser done to protect you from an rd stealing your vision.
