why does ibs cause thin, flat stools?

IBS And Stool: It very well may be how inflamed the intestines are at the time the food is ingested and how long it takes to circumnavigate the GI system.  Swollen intestines are probably not absorbing the calories as well, fluids may not be absorbed fully and the texture of the stool then appears different than other's formed stool can be.

54 f change my diet drastically and started working out lost 23 lbs since 5/15 have ibs the last 2 weeks i'venoticed my stools softer and a bit flat?

IBS: This is not unusual for IBS. You're at the age where a screening colonoscopy is recommended. This would reassure you that you have no colon pathology. If your stools are too soft, avoid harsh roughage in your diet.

hello i have a question. i suffer from ibs. colonoscopy came back normal 2 years ago . i take magnesium daiy to help me go. my stool comes out wide but  flat, very soft, quite messy sometimes to clean. what can it be? thank you

Very: difficult to control IBS. Good a good GI and dietician. Some prescription medications help too.

Flat stools `: in your age group are usually caused by SPASM of the lower bowel (and another term for IBS USED TO BE "SPASTIC COLON" Hope this information helps!

Likely no problem,,: The stool may be due to your diet more than anything else.  Although there are exceptions, you're not nearly at the age that this presents and you've got no other symptoms like fatigue and weight loss.  If you're still concerned, see your doctor and discuss the screening guidelines for colonoscopy and other tests.  Best of luck.

Not my first concern: IBS is a non specific category of GI complaints, not immediately attributable to a particular disease or organ.  I think you need to be seen by a medical doctor, so make a call and get an appointment. I'm concerned you may have something more definitive than IBS. Please, get a consultation with your doctor.

Functional?: It may be that this is all a component of the irritable bowel, which is a functional disorder, or some other in identified functional disorder. Could be a chronic  infection known as small bowel bacterial overgrowth. Return to your GI doc and ask if testing and/or treatment for this is appropriate. Hope this helps!

Extreme anxiety: Can include the use of medication but please do not forget mind-body modalities.  The gut is sometimes called "the second brain" because it is connected to thinking/moods.  Consider biofeedback or clinical hypnosis (see www.asch.net for licensed referrals).  Peace and good health.
