11mm flat polyp in ascending colon, last csp was 5 years ago and was clear. is this a concerning size and type of polyp for a 29 y/o female whose mom has hx of polyps and dad was dx with stage 3 rectal cancer at age 35? will i always have polyps now?

: Not necessarily. But with your family history you need a closer followup and possibly genetic testing

29 y/o female, dad - colon cancer, mom- polyps. my 2017 colonoscopy - clear, 2022 repeat - one flat polyp 11mm in ascending colon. waiting on path, but is this concerning based on size/shape? 3yrs too long for repeat? im a scared young mom here?

: At least the flat polyp was taken out so you should not worry too much because your concern does not change the outcome, just patiently wait for the biopsy result.

abd pain dx. ct w contrast of abdominal and pelvic cavity done small hiatal hernia found. no other findings. colonoscopy done. one flat 4mm polyp in sigmoid colon, diverticulosis in transverse and lt colon. still having on&off diarrhea.what ya think?

Diarrhea/pain ?'s: Onset of abdominal pain with diarrhea can occur with loss of ability to metabolize lactose, allowing lactic acid to cause the symptoms. Try removing all milk or milk containing products from your diet, or consume milk containing supplemental enzymes which will eliminate lactic acid.  Small hiatal hernias are usually asymptomatic.

Not necessarily: ...As some polyps do not develop into cancer. That said, if you have &quot;many&quot; polyps, it may be to your benefit to visit a specialist in cancer genetics.  Some folks carry inherited traits (genes) that lead to polyposis and different kinds of cancers. Talk to your pcp or gastroenterologist about this.

Maybe: some polyps have cancer, most don't. flat polyps are riskier for harboring bad cells. ask your doctor for the biopsy results.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Truly either pedunculated ( i.E with stalk) or sessile (flat) can harbor a malignant or pre-malignant lesion.  The flat ones are a little more worrisome, and size of lesion also plays a role.  Biopsy is the key to diagnosis - if the lesion is large and flat, there is always the possibility that malignancy may exist elsewhere within the lesion  and surgery or close follow up may be needed.

is endoscopic mucosal resection for a flat difficult colon polyp more dangerous that traditional surgery to remove that section of the colon?

Polyp: Endoscpic mucosal resection is safe in the proper hands. It is an outpatient procedure and does not require general amesthesia, follow up dpends on histopathology.

Not more likely: Polyps can be flat (sessile) which are more likely missed by endoscopists and can be more dangerous because any existing dysplasia is closer to deeper layers. The location in the colon doesn't affect malignant potential greatly. Most important are presence of abnormal tissue and if present, depth of invasion. Many polyps are benign and only require more frequent colonoscopy.

when polyps are removed from the colon are they checked immediately?

Not likely...: Unless there is a pathologist on site, the polyps undergo a process of fixation, staining, sectioning, and interpretation. Most experienced gastroenterologists can tell you with about 90% accuracy whether a removed polyp carries the risk of cancer and whether further intervention is required in the event the polyp may be large or invasive.

why would section of colon need to be removed surgically if polyps are found?

Accepted Answer

Prevention: Polyps have a propensity to develop into malignancy. If you have a section of bowel that is full of polyps, it is thought that removal of the section may avoid cancer development.
