my doctor left some polyps in my colon. he said he didn't remove them because they weren't a danger. is this common?

: Hyperplastic polyps, as opposed to adnomas, are benign, are not premalignant, and many pose no problems and don't necessarily have to he removed.

the polyp was flat and the doctor said he thought he got most of it out but he was not sure.  are polyps in the transverse colon more likely to be cancerous.

Not more likely: Polyps can be flat (sessile) which are more likely missed by endoscopists and can be more dangerous because any existing dysplasia is closer to deeper layers. The location in the colon doesn't affect malignant potential greatly. Most important are presence of abnormal tissue and if present, depth of invasion. Many polyps are benign and only require more frequent colonoscopy.

dx: gallstones & polyps.i have been having pain on my left back side and above my belly button.doc is not sure why i have pain on the left s/b on the ?

Gallstones: pain from gallstones is on Rt. side You may need more testing including your kidneys

i have mild lower tummy ache on the left side after defecation. it is exactly where a polyp was removed four years ago. i did have two normal colonoscopies since that time as my polyp was high grade dysplasia.could my doctor be missing a new polyp?

: I doubt that your discomfort following a BM would be caused by a polyp or even any colon pathology. It could be a transient abdominal muscular discomfort. However do continue with colonoscopy surveillance as directed by your gastroenterologist or colorectal surgeon.

what is that metal spike in the polyp my doctor removed for?

Lasso: If you were watching during your colonoscopy and the doctor removed a polyp, then you saw a lasso.  It encircles the polyp then the doctor uses electro cautery to burn off the polyp.  This was the spike.  The polyp looks much bigger on tv than it really is because of magnification.  Pathology will be two weeks.

Where?: Where were the polyps? Throat, colon, vagina, skin???? You need to be specific. If none were found, you usually will not need a second opinion.

Polyps: Polyps are not frequently found during a rectal exam because they are higher up in the colon and/or rectum and not able to be felt with the examiner's finger.

can the doctor tell if polyps are cancerous just by viewing them?

Accepted Answer

Sometimes: Some polyps are obviously cancerous, especially if they are ulcerated and have heaped up edges and typically are larger than normal polyps. But some relatively innocuous-looking polyps can have cancerous changes in them which surprise even an experienced observer (colonoscopist?), so no one wants to commit to labelling you with cancer till we are sure, patholgy confirmed.
