Visual migraine: Most likely visual (occipital) migraine.  Next time this happens, if ever, cover one eye and then the other and you will see the phenomena in each eye which confirms the diagnosis.

Flashing lights: Flashing lights in the eyes with the lights out cound be a sign of retinal issues (tears, breaks, or detachment), migraine headache related, or other issues.  You need to see an eye doctor as soon as possible for an evaluation.

kids 1/8 mile away shining bright red laser.  looked at red lantern size light, but when it became a laser pointer did not look into it. no flash blindness, loss of vision, etc. was wearing contacts. our area is dark. could this cause damage to eye?

Not to worry: Benign: Visual sleep starts were first described in the german literature as jolts or bolts of terror (schreckblitzen) or waking bolts or jolts (weckblitzen)the only danger is that you could develop a fear of sleep because of them or an anxiety disorder. They are triggered by stress, caffeine, exercise before bed.

Migraine or retina: I migraine can cause this but usually lasts for up to 20 minutes.  A pulling on the retina by the vitreous gel can do this as well and can lead to a tear in the retina.  Please have a dilated exam by an ophthalmologist to be sure.
