Do not rub/ irritate the area.
Your bm has to be smooth and yes - pat dry.

?infection: If this drainage is pus rather than clear mucus, an infection may be present that requires treatment. The rectal surgeon should evaluate, treat and followup on this. In the meantime try warm wet applications and then keep the area clean and dry except for an antibiotic ointment on some gauze until you see your surgeon.

Mucus: Fistula is a possibility. It is not uncommon for patients with crohn's;s disease and IBS to pass as described above. If there associated pain, tenderness, swelling, or purulent (pus) discharge than an infection may be present which should be promptly brought to your doctors attention.

Fistula : With a history of fistula formation, it is best to seek immediate advice. If you have a gastroenterologist who referred you for your previous surgery, i would contact him to discuss your symptoms and he will either want to see you immediately or make a referral. Otherwise, get in touch with the colo-rectal surgeon who performed your surgery.
