: Healing fractured bones becomes more difficult with age. Surgeries also become more dangerous. Choosing to not do surgery may leave you with difficulties and pain with walking which can affect your overall health. You need to carefully weigh these risks when deciding what your next step will be.

UBE & maybe others: W/ a 5th mt fracture treatment options usually consist of crutches, boot/ cast, or surgery. There is a chance that a fifth mt fracture may be a “jones fracture” &  have a high risk for nonunion, or failure to heal properly, so timely medical intervention is key for an optimal outcome. Ask your physician about swimming, biking, or elliptical based on your type of fracture & stage of healing.

Pain is typically: pinpoint (or in one spot on the outside of your foot).  it hurts to walk on your foot typically the outside of your foot.  it will ache when not ambulating, usually in females, middle age and with a distant history of injury.

Not likely.: I guess anything is possible, but I would think symptoms would develop as the weeks went by. Typically, swelling and pain would limit your ability to function normally. I have had patients continue with their activity, on a reduced scale, and eventually recover, however, in substantially less than 2 years.

will wriggling toes affect fifth metatarsal midshaft fracture recovery? will it cause more displacement? will flexing ankle affect as well?

Accepted Answer

Not typically : No, not typically.  If the fractures were that unstable, we would really have to stabilize them with some form of fixation.  If your fractures are not displaced, it is highly unlikely you could dipsplce them dimply by "wiggling" your toes.
