is it normal to start a fever after you start antibiotics? there was no fever when the antibiotics were prescribed.

Depends...: It usually takes antibiotics 24 to 48 hours to start actually working on the infection. If this has been the time frame you have been taking them for this could be related to the infection itself. If you have been taking them for more than 2 days then you might need a different antibiotic. I would suggest to keep taking them and if after 2 days the fever continues see your doctor again.

4 y/o recovering from strep/scarlet fever.  3 days after starting antibiotics small petechial rash appeared near shoulder- the rest of the scarlet fever rash is gone.  could this be from strep or antibiotics? no spreading no fever no trauma to area.

Rash: Unlikely from antibiotics if is an isolated area. More likely from scarlet fever. If it spreads or if he has any bleeding or remains unwell, have him rechecked with blood and urine testing. All the best.

Maybe: Too many ifs in this question.  You may be seeing inflammatory changes from an infection which the antibiotics are just beginning to control, you may not be getting the correct antibiotic, the urinary tract infection may have reached a stage where it requires more than antibiotics, etc.  Go back and see your doctor if not better fairly quickly.

Complicated: Without knowing why antibiotics were given it is  impossible to answer this. Post-operative fever is often from infectious complications of surgery.  Antibiotics can sometimes suppress fever without actually effectively treating the underlying problem. If your fever returns it might be helpful to ask your doctor to get an infectious diseases consultant involved. Good luck, hope you are better soon.

Maybe: It depends upon what the baby is being treated for and whether the treatment is empirical or directed against a known organism.  Even if the antibiotic is appropriate it may take a day or two for all symptoms to be ameliorated.  If it is not the right choice of treatment then persistence of fever is not unexpected.

Persistent fever: Despite antibiotics could mean a viral illness or bacterial infection not sensitive to the antibiotics you are taking. You need to be re-evaluated and maybe, get a new antibiotics after lab tests.

Pediatrician?: Certainly a call to the pediatrician's office can do no harm...Might even get one in again for a look see....Having said that, there are some medications which themselves can elevate core body temperature.  Secondly, the antibiotics may not be sensitive enough to what they were originally tempted to do.

If you have been on: . If on the antibiotic for six days call your doctor. If you are on an antibiotic for 5 or more days and still running a fever over 100 degrees call your doctor.

Abs: This is a low grade temperature and usually not alarming. But need more history. You were on antibiotics for what reason?  Did you get better?  Could be all viral and then symptomatic treatment is recommended. Need more history from you

You may need to: get back to the healthcare provider that treated you initially if the fever is increasing back up or persistent.  Sometimes fever can occur due to a viral infection that the antibiotics (which are used to treat bacterial infections) cannot touch.  Or it may be a sign that the original bacterial infection is resistant to the antibiotic that you are taking.
