i am currently taking a combination birth control and spironolactone for acne. i recently wanted to include fenugreek and maca root supplements since i have noticed it has helped me gain weight. should i be taking them all together? is it safe?

Probably okay...: I don't believe if there is a study to confirm the potential interaction among these natural substances. So, use them in moderation, watch, and see. But remember: occasionally, some so-called natural products may secretly mix and adulterate some prescribed ingredients to pump up its claimed effects because such products are not fda-regulated.

You can, but WHY?: If your hyperthyroidism has been successfully treated and is resolved, then your body should respond normally to anything.
However, these roots and extracts have absolutely no beneficial effects and are potentially harmful.  There is no way to enhance or balance your hormones.  Your body will do that naturally if you let it.

Waste of time/effort: Your body contour is based more on your genetic endowment/athletic endeavors than anything else. It is a myth that you could increase size/ distribution of muscle mass or size by taking any supplement. They are not regulated as to claims or effectiveness so you can try them if you wish, they are considered safe in common doses. However, I consider them a waste of time/effort.

Can't say for sure: Maca in particular can have hormonal effects.  How this might effect hormonal balance is unclear.  You really need to see a qualified herbalist/doctor to help you decide if this will be helpful or not.  Weight gain and spot reducing is not likely.  Healthy diet and regular exercise are the key.

can i take maca powder or fenugreek while on the depo shot? will it interfere with my birth control? i'm not trying to get pregnant at the moment..

Not likely: to interfere with the depo provera shot. What reason for the supplements? It sometimes takes up to a year for the depo to leave your system and allow ovulation to resume.

: Taking all the herbs in the world will not increase your breast size. Hormonal changes may make a small difference. Your prescribing physician can give you further guidance.

Not recommended : Fenugreek might be unsafe for children or teenagers . Some reports have linked fenugreek tea to loss of consciousness in children. An unusual body odor resembling maple syrup may occur in children drinking fenugreek tea.

Unknown.: A direct link to fenugreek consumption has not been found. A variety of conditions have been reported in patients with hematospermia, including benign and malignant disorders of the prostate gland, seminal vesicles, spermatic cord, and ejaculatory duct system, and urinary tract infections.  However, the cause is unknown in most patients.
