my husband is on a pain reg & 0 works. fentanyl, oxycontin, vic, perc, morphine, dilaudid.. by chance at an er doc gave him 1mg of ativan & he said he finally wasnt in pain! his pain doc refuses to give him ativan says due to addiction? help?

: There is a risk of addiction but the risk much lower than that for opiates. It may be prudent to see a different doctor for a second opinion.

i am currently on ms contin and hydrocodone for a dislocating left and / broken right arm but the pain is not being touched. what other meds should i try to alleviate the pain besides methadone or fentanyl? tried dilaudid, morphine, and most others?

: Am very concerned about your depiction.  Opioids should have been necessitated for only one week, and it appears that you are at sky-high risk for addiction, amongst other problems. Similar: They are very similar (as are all opioids).  Obviously a transdermal product (fentanyl patch) is much easier to use than having to inject something iv.  In my experience the incidence of nausea, vomiting and constipation are better with the fentayl patch.  Dilaudid is available as both an immediate release oral product and an extended release product (exalgo).

Narcotic patches: The patch you ask about is not a morphine patch, but is a patch with fentanyl citrate.  This is a synthetic potent fat soluble medication much more potent than morphine and with more action in the spinal cord and brain areas due to high fat absorption.  Due to this the patch can stay effective for up to 12-24 hours after patch removal even though fentanyl can be broken down quickly be careful.

No: Dilaudid (also known as hydromorphone) is an opioid pain medication that is a man-made cousin of morphine (which comes from the opium poppy plant). It is much more potent on a milligram per milligram basis.

Half-life & delivery: Both are opioids but stay in your body for different lengths of time (half-life) and, of course differ in their delivery (oral versus patch).

It is possible: Both drugs in the same class (opioids) so they will both show up the same.  Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid and much stronger than morphine. When testing for Morphine, it will show positive for morphine metabolites or fentanyl. Take care.

No: Generally, unless you get some sweating as a side effect there would not be any point in taking any opioid for a fever. Tylenol (acetaminophen) or any of the nsaid's are effective at reducing fever. If there isn't any response you need to seek medical attention.
