Flexor/groin pull: You may have strained your hip flexor muscles (psoas/rectus femorus) required for 'lifing your leg or running'
a 'groin pull'  is also caused over-stretching of the adductor muscles (which include the adductor magnus, longus, brevis..)

Spinal stenosis affects the legs while walking, Hip joint arthritis/bursitis can cause pain with walking. Vascular problems may also. I would suggest a medical consult. Many factors (your age, duration of problems, location, description of pain, other health concerns, etc.) are involved in solving your concern.

Bursa.: You may have inflammed the trochanteric bursa, on the upper, outer part of your thigh. If it only happened two days ago, you should apply ice packs and take aleve (naproxen) or advil, as directed. Hopefully it will get better in a week or two.

They usually have osteopenia due to Vit. D deficiency. The diet is equally important as vegans could have Vit. D deficiency. hence review this with your family physician.

Get checked!: Severe pain is always scary!  Sometimes it ends up being a temporary minor problem, other times it can be serious.  Pain in that area could indicate a hernia.  If there is pain with a hernia that may mean it is incarcerated (strangulated), which is serious.  See a doc quickly.  If the pain does not resolve promptly, worsens, he has fever, vomiting go to an ER!
