Possible arthritis: If you have pain and tenderness in feet then arthritis is possible. See a rheumatologist or a neurologist.

Probably not thewire: There are several causes of foot swelling including peripheral edema, decreased circulation, venous insufficienty, kidney issues or cardiac issues or even medications &amp; Mg deficiency. Thus, you should get it checked out by your primary care MD and see if leg elevation, compression socks, massage, a diuretic, lemon slices in your water,epsom salt bath or soak or massage are appropriate and can help

Too much salt: Likely too much salt with your holiday meals! Drink water to flush the salt our of your system. If fails to improve, could be a heart or kidney problem and you need to see your primary care doctor .

It depends: Without an exam, it is difficult to tell.  Sounds like posterior tibialis tendon pathology or possibly plantar fasciitis.  You should see a podiatrist to see if you need support, immobilization or stretching. The cause dictates the treatment plan.

Unilateral swelling : One sided or unilateral swelling is usually caused by a valve problem. However you are very young and have not seen in young patients very often if ever. You should see a vascular surgeon for follow up

Possible rheumatoid: B"sd
does not sound like related to sugars.  With type 1 diabetes (not supposed to say "diabetic" any more) other autoimmune diseases are more common.  A possiblity would be rheumatoid arthritis.  Should have a medical exam and appropriate testing (including specific blood tests). If RA , effective disease modifying therapies available from rheumatologist.  Always ready to talk about diabetes.

vein problem: If you are swelling a lot and there are pigmentation changes visible on your skin you should see a vascular specialist. This could be an early sign that your veins may have problems returning the blood back to your heart.

What is the question: If you are producing blockage of return of blood from your veins and it is creating peripheral swelling then  you have to solve the problem producing this.  Am not sure that altering your sleeping positions is a medical issue, but rather something to be discussed with a sleep engineer if there is such a thing.

Caution: The veins that return blood from your feet/legs run up the back of your leg in the calf. If you obstruct venous return by allowing your leg to hang over the side of the bed all night, you will promote swelling, but worse, you can provoke a deep vein thrombosis, in fact, you may already have. You need to be seen to have a blood clot ruled out. Any use of alcohol or sedatives make this worse.
