45 yr old male for physical. dr just listened to heart and lungs, script for blood wk. did not look in eyes, ears, feel lymph nodes. is this normal?

Unfortunately: most doctors no longer have the time alloted to them to do a proper physical.  Though many doctors believe that looking at these parts of the body is very "low yield" for finding actual disease or pathology, it is necessary to give the doctor the best chance of spotting something unusual at a later time, and to be familiar with the patient's body.  It also makes the patient feels "cared for".

i found a small bean sized lump in the lower left side of my neck, its smooth and about 1cm. there isnt one on the other side, no pain or redness. is this likely to be cancer? can you feel normal lymph nodes? in the neck?

: What you describe are likely normal resting lymph nodes. They are more often found in the neck because they are not buried within fat or tissue like they are in the rest of the body. The most common problem they could bring is when one swells to golf ball size from infection &amp; needs to be drained to heal. Most often they swell when working &amp; shrink weeks later to rest.

is it normal for lymph nodes to swell on both sides of the neck? i dont feel sick and they dont hurt. its just a fullness feeling.

Usually not felt: Lymphatic system absorbs/carries things too big to go into the arteries/veins like bacteria eaten by white cells and digested food. Lymph nodes "taste" the lymph for anything bad  like bacteria/viruses/cancers, etc. When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system and your body reacts.  They enlarge in response to the inflammation they create when they react.  They shrink when all is well.

: An enlarged lymph node is not a normal one but it can be a benign change in case of a reactive lymph node which does not resolve completely. At times, doctor may mean a benign lymph node as a normal one. If your doctor said those lymph nodes are normal then you should not pay any concern.

: It has to do with the unit of measurement more than anything, 1-1.25 cm ( ~1/2 inch) remain in general at the upper limit of what is considered to be normal. However, while size is important, dynamics and characteristics ( such as painful/ painless, fixed/mobile) are much more important, specifically for enlarging lymph nodes.

is it normal to be able to feel lymph nodes in certain places around the body and when the body is in certain positions?

Sure: Lymph nodes are like little beans. The feel like beans of various sizes but similar shapes. Areas of multiple enlarged beans can mean a problem. If the beans grow together in a mass and start to stick together or onto something else, that can mean a big problem. Individual, movable nodes that grow to a nickel in diameter are usually ok in kids, teens, or young adults, but may need a doctor's exam.

when are lymph nodes in children considered to be enlarged?  i can feel them in my child, but i'm not sure if they are normal or not

Variable: They are usually pea sized at rest and occasionally bean sized.When they become sore to touch or reach quarter size they have been stimulated and are doing what lymph glands do.The increased size generally persists up to 3 wks before fading. Rarely they trap aggressive germs and become golf ball sized and need to be drained.

Yes: Lymph nodes are more palpable when we are youngsters, but if you have been evaluated and they have not since changed, then no cause for concern.
