Yes: By definition, constipation is difficulty or inability to have a bowel movement.  A fecal impaction preventing movement of fecal matter through the colon would definitely qualify.  However, you can still be constipated without a fecal impaction.  A fecal impaction requires urgent medical care, as you risk perforating the bowel with the increased pressure and space occupation.

Yes: the longer you go without a bowel movement or complete evacuation then higher risk that stool will remain in the rectum long enough to get more dessicated (dried out from water being removed while in rectum), harder (more difficult to pass without straining &amp;/or pain) and larger (large enough to get stuck or impacted). At some point pain usually occurs &amp; the stool becomes more difficult to pass

The cause: Fecal impaction is a relatively common cause of constipation.  Generally is a result of dehydration and low fiber and sometimes exacerbated when defecation is avoided for a period of time.  Manual disimpaction with a lubricated gloved finger may be necessary.  Notably, this can cause diarrhea as well if liquified fecal matter oozes around the impaction.

: Constipation is a know side effect of this medication - You may take a fiber laxative like Metamucil and drink enough water daily so that your urine is colorless. For the long term you may try to increase your intake of fiber foods. Consult this site for fiber foods.

colonoscopy shows fecal impaction after 5+ yrs of constipation (1 bm or less a week). why does this make me feel sick if constipation not toxic?

IBS?: Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a Diagnosis of exclusion, so be sure to see a GI dr. and get evaluated.  IBS-C seems to be a possibility here, and there are meds that can help along with dietary changes and decreasing stress.  IBS is common in women 20-40yo and everyday stress can worsen symptoms. IBS-C can cause irritability,  bloating, and discomfort. Best wishes.

i have had constipation for many months, and when it ended i always teetered on the edge of constipation. i started drinking 1 - 3 gallons a day a month or two back. i think i have internal piles, and fecal compaction. should i use senna tea 3 days?

: You are drinking way too much water. too much water does not cure constipation . Drink according to your body water loss ( normally 6-7 glasses. Fecal impaction requires a strong laxative and if not relieved an exam by your MD/Gastro Ent. to dis-impact and to also check for internal hemorrhoid's . Eat food with some roughage, PL see your MD and follow his/her guidance to regularize your bowels.

: It's true that liquid feces can leak out around a fecal impaction, but it's characteristic to have urge for a BM with associated abdominal cramping which can be severe. Abdominal distension my also be present.  Impactions require manual removal by a health professional if soap suds enemas aren't successful.

i am 22 and scared i might have cancer i dont have any symptoms as far on and off constipation and consistency of my stool/shape i did a fecal occult test was negative . my stool has been looking narrower than usually mostly everytime i poop?

: Cancer of the GI tract is rare in 22-year old females, depending on family history. However, you should consider having a complete evaluation by a gastroenterologist. There are a number of possibilities in regards to a diagnosis meeting the description you provide. A GI doctor would likely order other tests or procedures to narrow down the possible causes of your bowel issues.
