should blood test come back normal if you have been told you have extreme fatty liver?

They can: Fatty liver (steatohepatitis, and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (nash))once was thought to be "not that bad" but we now recognize it as a serious liver problem. Common in folks with diabetes/cholesterol problems. It is common to pick it up because of abnormal liver enzymes on bloodwork; however those labs can be normal, too. Worst case is normal labs because the liver is badly damaged/cirrhosis.

good morning, my alt level on my recent blood work shows a result of 48u/l, should i be concern? what would be the cause of this high result? should i do further test besides ultrasound on my liver? ultrasound results indicate i have fatty liver. not sure

Accepted Answer

Not too high: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, fatty liver can explain the minimal elevation in ALT. If you drink alcohol, stop entirely. If you are even minimally overweight, lose weight.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

ex heavy drinker for 1yr. had an us, ct 3 sets of blood all came back normal?. can all these tests miss a mild/moderate fatty liver ? ty

Not usually.: usually an ultrasound of the liver can detect mild to moderate fatty liver fairly easily. If there is question, you may want to have the ultrasound reviewed by the radiologist who read it previously.  good luck.

how long does it take to get liver enzymes back to normal from taking any medicine ? had ultrasound was normal , no sign of fatty liver or anything ,so he thinks maybe few excedrine week before blood test? had baby 2.5 months ago and not obese?

: Congratulations on your baby! Usually liver enzymes return to normal within a couple weeks of stopping the medication, if that is the cause. If the enzymes remain elevated your doctor will search for other causes of elevated liver enzymes.

passing yellow stools all the time i have had all the blood tests done stool test done all tests came back ok.  abdominal ultrasound came back ok. apart from  showing a slight fatty liver, no pain or discomfort. what could be causing the yellow stool?

: With all the tests noted above, the yellow stools should be no bother. As for the slight fatty liver if alcohol consumption is an issue, one should reduce or stop the intake.

Yes: avoid alcohol, lose weight, do exercise, avoid fatty meals. Liver can go back to normal. If it doesn't you can develop cirrhosis of the liver

2x elevated LFT's: You are describing liver tests that are two times elevated over "normal" for a prolonged period of time. Persistent elevation over 6 months or more may warrant liver biopsy, & certainly warrants a comprehensive battery of blood tests to rule out infection, metabolic problems,  autoimmune disease, familial liver diseases, etc. Ask your family doctor for a referral to a gi/liver specialist.

Liver enzymes: Sgot and SGPT re liver enzymes that are very sensitive to inflammation of the liver cells or hepatocytes.

Accepted Answer

Not especially : Source of vitamins a and d; don't overdo. Fatty liver often associated with overweight, alcohol, some meds. Address those issues.
