im running out of statins and wondered if i should take niacin instead, i think the statins are affecting my liver, im retaining water, should i stop ?

Accepted Answer

Not the same: Niacin is a whole lot less potent compared to statins.  See your doctor and talk about the swelling as that's not a common side effect of statins.

does the ketogenic diet or metformin or statins raise bun levels? i also lost 30lbs + and been on meds since april and havent been drinking enough water and eat 80-110g of protein and under 14g of net carbs and 8-30g total carbs a day?

: Ketogenic means that which is produced after protein breakdown after ingestion. Yes Bun goes up but noemal kidney function can handle it. Remember too much of a good thing is not necessarily a good thing. Best is normal contolled diet and exercise. Good luck.

fat soluble vit vs. water soluble? whats the difference between the two?

Vitamins: Fat soluble vitamins are vitamins A, D, E, and K. All of the other vitamins are water soluble and tend to get excreted in urine. Solubility is a property of a substance to be soluble, like orange juice concentrate stirring into water as an example of water solubility. Some substances are happier in a lipid or fat environment and are not water soluble, like oil. Vitamins are like this too.

Magnesium=necessary: Magnesium is a water soluble mineral that most people are whole-body deficient in. At high doses, it causes diarrhea.  If the kidneys are compromised in any way, the dose needs to be lower and monitored by a physician.  A RBC magnesium level is the most useful test as serum magnesium is kept at a very steady level.  Magnesium is necessary to 300+ reactions in the body.

what exactly is the difference between water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins?

Vitamins: Fat soluble (a, d, e, k) have to be processed for absorption with enzymes that digest fat.  They can be stored in fatty storage areas so if too much taken, toxicity can occur.  Vitamin d from sun is controlled by body's storage and processing to avoid that.  Water soluble vitamins typically not stored so need to be taken daily.

Yes, better because:: B vitamins will be will absorbed when taken with or without food, but some people experience nausea if taking a strong B complex on an empty stomach. Also, B vitamins play an important role in metabolizing our food and are mostly not retained long so are likely to be most beneficial when taken shortly before, with or after meals.

Yes - No Problems: You can take both of these together with not impact on absorbing either vitamin / supplement.

Sorry: People are not like car radiators--you cannot flush out the system--even a large intake of fluid (which could pose health hazards) will only change the water soluble concentration you are seeking to modify by a little bit in the short term. If you were seeking more of a 'detox' approach, increasing fluids over several days can help a little, but slow process.

Different components: Gnc sports vitamins (like most multivitamins) are made up of many individual vitamins and minerals. For example, vitamins b and c are water soluble, whereas vitamins a, d, e, and k are not.

If using condoms: It needs to be water soluble to prevent the condom from tearing or slipping off.
