can a breastfeeding consultant order blood work?

Accepted Answer

Not in most locals: State rules vary but most require a physician, pa or certified nurse practitioner to order any lab. Most consultants work alongside some of these professionals & can recommend that it be done.

i am 11 months postpartum and i am still breastfeeding part time. i had routine blood work done yesterday. my tsh is 0.01, t3 is 134, t4 free is 1.3. does this mean i have hyperthyroidism?

Thyroid lab tests : To answer that it should be understood that tests results are taken into account with the things the patients, says, the examination, all lab tests, and all other diagnostic tests. Biotin interferes with TSH results. I  would speak to your doctor, these results may need repeating

my blood work showed normal prolactin level of 28. i have been breastfeeding only twice a day & my baby is 11 months old. should i expect my period to start soon with a normal prolactin or is prolactin not responsible for period during breastfeeding?

Some basics:: Elevated level of prolactin in nursing women suppresses the secretion of estrogen and progesterone resulting in amenorrhea.  Your prolactin level is a bit higher than that of non pregnant woman (normal: below 25 ng/dl), probably related to intermittent breastfeeding.  Once the level drops below 25, normal uterine cycle is likely to resume soon after.

i was eating at work and a work mate who was eating nearby while eating splashed some of his saliva and food in my plate. now am worried. can i get hiv like this. am a breastfeeding mother with 3 month old baby. i didn't see any blood in my food?

: HIV cannot be transmitted through above mentioned mechanism. Hand hygiene rules still apply as to risk for transmission for other bacteria including hepatitis A. A reliable site for information regarding HIV transmission is cdc.gov.

Get checked: Blood in the urine can be from many different things. It could be anything from infection to kidney stones to cancer. The source of bleeding could be anywhere from the kidneys to the bladder. I would recommend work up with your primary care doctor.

Depends: Depends on what you're using. The worst case scenario is to pass along the medicine to the baby and cause it to have low BP. Not all BP meds pass into the milk, though, so contemplative choice of medication is indicated.

Why ?: It's a normal & lifesaving process that should be a common & accepted part of american life.Some may be squeamish but that's a personal problem. If you're bothered don't look. Why should anyone have to scoot of to a bathroom stall to do something that is simple & quick with today's meters.

No: It is not recommended to be a blood donor while pregnant or breast feeding. Both body states require a great conservation of nutrients and energy, which neither of the mentioned states can spare.

i have startes to bleed heavily, red blood, 5 weeks postpartum and i am exclusively breastfeeding. should this be a concern?

Call your OBGYN: bleeding should be much less after 10 days. mild spotting out to 6 weeks.  If this heavy bleeding has just started recently,this is not normal. be safe and call your doctor.
