why do my eyes hurt in the sunlight?

The sun is strong: Sunlight is modified by a number of reflexes to minimize damage to the eyes.  If you have a sudden, and new sensitivity to sunlight, then there could be inflammation of the surface of the eye or inside.  If this is true, then see your ophthalmologist to determine if your eyes are fine.

is it normal for eyes to hurt in bright light i.e sunlight? my eyes hurt in bright sunlight even when iam not looking directly into the sun. is this normal?

Accepted Answer

: Light sensitivity has many possible etiologies. People with light colored eyes usually are more light sensitive than others, this is not progressive. The main cause I have seen is dryness of the eye surface, this is easily treated with over the counter lubricating eye drops. Cataract and inflammation inside the eye are less common causes but need to be evaluated.

General health?: Sometimes vision changes can be caused by high or low blood sugar - it is important to be tested for diabetes. Also, sometimes thyroid disease can cause eye changes. Try to avoid too much caffeine and concentrated sugars and see if that helps.  Also, it is common in the 40's for the lenses of the eyes to lose the ability to change focus, so I would recommend another eye exam.

Headache: Headaches, light sensitivity and other causes can be at work. If this has been happening for some time, it could be dry eyes or an inflammation. If this is a recent event, and occurs daily, have an eye doctor take a look. There is often a simple explanation for the irritation, and possibly an easy fix.

Dry eye/strain: Dry eye or eye strain can cause discomfort.  Try using artificial tears to help lubricate the eye and see if that helps.  You may also want to have your vision checked to see if glasses could help.

Dryness: When you sleep, you do not blink.  Blinking helps keep the eyes lubricated and people that have dry eye, have a hard time when getting up in the morning due to dryness.  Try an over the counter tear gel at bed time and regular artificial tears during the day.

Depends: Is the pain from the eye or from the eyelids?   Does it hurt to move the eye?  Is the vision disturbed?  Have you had an attack like this in the past? You would do well to see an eye doctor --- but in a hurry if the vision is down or the eye is very red.

Ocular surface: dryness in a healthy young person without other known ocular disease usually is due to dry eyes. Again, this is if there is no other ocular disease process ongoing. Try using lubricating eye drops to minimize any surface dryness leading to blurred vision. If this does not help then a good exam with a refraction for spectacles will be necessary.

Doubtful: Transient photopsia's of standard flashlight beams should cause no permanent damage with brief exposure. Never point any laser type light into someones eyes.

See an eye doctor: The most common cause of pain on eye movement is atypical headache, which is often relieved with Ibuprofen or aspirin. Less common, but more concerning, is a condition called retrobulbar optic neuritis, which typically affects women in their 40s, and is often associated with vision changes as well. I strongly recommend you see an eye doctor as soon as possible to rule this out.
