hi,today my mum had a routine eye test and they found a shadow behind her eye and have referred her to her gp to get her an oppintment at an eye clini?

In general,: a gray shadow or mole located at the back of the eye is a choroidal nevus or congenital retinal nevus. These are almost always harmless. But a skilled Ophthalmologist is needed to take photographs or record the characteristics of the shadow or mole so it can be monitored and tracked. Very rarely this might be a cancerous mole or melanoma. Complying with this protocol is strongly advised.

Floaters: You may have floaters in your eyes.  See an eye physician and have a full exam (slit lamp) they can check for floaters.

Floaters  : Usually black spots in your vision are components of the vitreous humor that's normally found in the back of your eye.  As you age, the vitreous breaks down and you see the edges of it.  This usually is not a sign of a problem unless you have a lot of sudden floaters or flashes as well.

Vitreous floater: It sounds like you have vitreous floaters, little grayish spots of differing shapes in the vitreous cavity of your eye. These increase with aging, myopia, lattice degeneration, and can arise from retinal tears, inflammation, trauma, surgery. The dilated eye examination is important to rule out serious causes that need treatment. As long as this has been done, just monitor for change.

Need to evaluate : A vision test is only one part of an eye exam. You need to see an ophthalmologist or an optometrist who can dilate your eye and exam the back part of your eye.

Normal: The eye and brain do not like to have a pattern of incoming information interrupted.  When you close your eyes, the signal diminishes substantially and your normally active eye and brain send internal patterns and signals to compensate.  Don't worry about this and enjoy the show.

Eye bleed: Forget your boyfriend's advice and have her see an eye doctor as soon as she can. She may have a serious cause for her hemorrhage there. Do it as soon as you can. Your boyfriend's advice is worth what you paid for it. Good luck to your mother.

Dark circles: If you're referring to dark circles under your eyes, then its a million dollar question that everyone wants answers to.
It can be a variety of reasons, eg. genetics, lack of sleep, fatigue, not eating well, weight loss.certain medications, getting older, etc.   And they are difficult to treat, depending on the cause.  Obviously do the things you can do, eat healthy, be healthy, sleep adequately...

No: Have him se a pediatric ophthalmologist immediately. You don't live far from NYC. Go to either Eye Institute at Columbia or at Cornell, both world renowned places.

i went to get a regular vision test and was told my eye seemed swollen behind. i have to see a specialist and i am scared. what could this mean?

Many options: You are probably lucky that this was found.  There are a number of reasons for swelling either in the back of the eye or behind the eye.  I am guessing you are seeing an ophthalmologist who can sort this out for you.  Eye treatment has advanced significantly in the last decade so I wouldn't worry at this point.  Just be curious as to what it is.
