Yes: Ibd is a risk factor for colon cancer. The risk in ulcerative colitis increases the longer you have the disease, and frequent colonoscopies are recommended with random biopsies to look for abnormal cells.  In Crohn's disease, the risk is higher than the general population, but is not as high in ulcerative colitis patients.

Your GI doctor will now let you know when you should be re-tested to keep you healthy and safe.

Essentially the same: The terms have often been used synonymously.  However, a coating of mucus (a colon lubricant) when present in large volume may signal not only problems with colon spasm (ie. Irritable bowel syndrome), but also partial obstruction, infection, ; even sloughed colon lining due to a variety of diseases. It's critical to distinguish ibs from inflammatory bowel diseases (crohn's, ulcerative colitis...).

Are U sure it's gas?: Many report a sense of gasiness, bloating, pressure, abdominal fullness. This may (or not) originate in gut, & may (or not) be disease-related. Some are sensitive to gut distension, have bacterial overgrowth, have altered gut motility or inflammation. It's best to get checked. Also, keep a symptom diary, consider bifidobacter probiotics, start food elimination trials, avoid artificial sweeteners.

Could be : Diverticular disease is seen in older patients ie over 60, but I have seen it in younger people. One of the theories on why people get diverticuli, or tiny pouches, in the colon, is the low fiber, high fat diet in the U.S. There may also be an inherited aspect.Thickened wall of the colon and diverticuli aren't associated with cancer, but it's reasonable to get a colonoscopy--talk to your doctor.

Diverticula are: formed by increased pressure on weakened spots of the intestinal walls by gas, waste, or liquid. Diverticula can form while straining during a bowel movement, such as with constipation. Squeezing the colon increases the pressure within the colon lumen.  There are likely both voluntary and involuntary components in the development of dive reticular disease.

Associated problems: "Excess stool in the coloin" implies a motility disorder of the colon. A motility problem can involve multiple organs in the GI tract.
Stool does not generally back up from the colon into the small intestine, other than during episodes of colon obstruction.
