Hip abductors: Hip abductor strengthening exercises are ideal.  One exercise is the crab walk.  Tie a theraband in a closed loop, place it around your ankles, bend hips and knees slightly, and walk sideways 10 steps then back again and repeat.  Try 3 sets of this a day.  Another good exercise are clamshells.  Lie with op side up, flex knees and hips, keep ankles together and open and close knees.

Weakness: Assuming that all else ( leg lengths equal and no nerve injury) is ok the most common reason for limp is weakness , especially of the abductor muscles. These muscles move the hip out to the side away from the body. A physical therapist can design a program to strengthen these muscles.

Don't run: Depending on a number of factors including the surgical approach used, whether the leg was lengthened and differences among patients you can expect to have some limp for several months after hip replacement surgery.  These replacements were not made for the impact of running and i strongly advise my patients to avoid those types of impact activities which will shorten implant life.

Walking and stairs: The muscles you want to strengthen most are those that move your hip and also stabilize the hip replacement.  Walking and stairs are the easiest things to do in the beginning.  This should not be painful but may be uncomfortable depending on how long ago the surgery was.  Standing with something to help you balance and lifting the leg to the side in a scissor like movement will help as well.

Post Op Care: Most likely yes. But none of us here can see what the post op instructions from your surgeon were or what the complications were or are to your surgery and your health.  Surgeons would never let you leave the hospital without specific post op instructions.

Ask your doctor: I posit you'll be able to do many of the same activities you did before the hip surgery, if not more since you are not in pain, i hope.  But you should always ask your surgeon before doing anything to make sure your body and procedure heal so you avoid complications.

PT consult: is necessary for a comprehesive rehabilitation program. Most will start with gentle, passive range of motion coupleled with ultrasound or heat treatments. No vigorous walking, lifting, bending or aerobics until cleared by PT.

What you need is to-: -have strong ABductors of the hip as well as stretching the flexors and extensors of the hip. This is not something you can do in a short time. A proper exercise routine must be set up for your needs &amp; abilities, &amp; it takes months to do this. If your surgery is soon, nothing will make this happen rapidly.

Accepted Answer

Varies: You would want to check with your surgeon.  Most of the time you do need to limit your activities to some degree, particularly if you have a press fit hip in which bony ingrowth is needed to provide long term stability of the implant.  For a period of time you also need to be careful not to put yourself in a position in which you might dislocate your hip.  Thank you for the question.
