Herniated disc: The exercise are really based on where the pain distribution is location and any other associated signs or symptoms. Consultation with a local physical therapist would like be the best recommendation as they have the most experience in this type of treatment.

Yes, it may!: Yes – unless it's a nerve root compression or loss of strength in the leg.  If no root compression and normal strength, recovery is possible.  1. Stop all exercises for 2-3 weeks.  2. Stop all caffeine  use.  3. Lidocaine base (not hydrochloride!) cream phonophoresis (10% x30 min x10 times; do not wash the cream off after the treatment, cover with a thin plastic for 24 hours ("occlusive dressing").

how do we check if l5 s1 disc herniation can be treated with exercise and medication and no surgery is required? visited spine surgeon, he checked with leg flexibility and i had no pain. bt pain while i get up from sitting position. suggested surgery?

: Although indications for surgery may vary, the usual basics include intolerable pain unresponsive to treatment, progressive muscle weakness and/or atrophy, bladder compromise afflicting urinary function, cauda equina syndrome, and spinal cord involvement.  An EMG study could objectify the extent of nerve compression.  A second or even third opinion is recommended.

Wait for 6-8 weeks: If no relief after 8 weeks and herniated disc is also on left  side and co-relates well with the symptoms then you should consider surgery. Usually surgery will relieve leg pain but back pain may persist.

hi, i am 22 (female) i have herniated disc of l5-s1. ct scan+mri done. doctor in ukraine said to get surgery done because i'm at risk of paralysis but doctor in ireland said not to get surgery. i'm in intense pain. medications and exercise don't work?

: If you have tried physiotherapy and medications with no improvement then you may need surgery. But pl see a doc specializing in it. Hope you feel better

Clearance by surgeon: After clearance, a progressive program emphasizing core strengthening, flexibility, good posture, and proper use of lower back mechanics. Don't do those things that aggravate your symptoms. May need work with a physical therapist or trainer.

Radiculopathy: Typically "slip disc" surgery refers to  discectomy done for a herniated disc - this type of surgery is most effective for radiating leg pains, but not as effective for back pain.  Conservative treatment, such as physical therapy and/or anti-inflammatory meds, can often improve back pain, but if symptoms persist then fusion surgery vs disc replacement surgery are options.

i have moderate osteoarthritis of the spine at l5s1. i dont have any disc narrowing or spondylothesis. i am going to p.t. i am 70. should i be able to manage this with exercise and ibuprofen? i am afraid of having to have back surgery?

: Give physical therapy a try. Regular aerobic exercise will help by making your muscles stronger and more flexible. From what you described, need for surgery is unlikely.

what happens during artificial disc surgery?

Discectomy: Once the surgical approach to the disc is completed, a typical artificial disc surgery involves removal of the disc cartilage  to prepare for the implant. Ligaments may also be resected in order to alllow for sizing and proper fit of the implant. Once the implant(s) are placed, the tissues are cleansed to remove any debris and the wound is closed.

do i need to have surgery for a dislocsted disc?

No such thing: Discs don't "dislocate." you may have a bulging disc, and this can be treated a variety of ways such as physical therapy or steroid injections. Surgery is a last resort in most cases.
