Variable: There is some pain involved because of soft tissues and bone are cut and manipulated.  Hardware also has to be placed.  Many surgeons performing use regional nerve blocks which substantially decrease and sometimes even eliminate the pain for an extended time.  Everyone has a different pain tolerance and response to pain medications as well.  In short the pain levels vary with individual cases.

6 months: Full recovery can take up to six months.  Most surgeons will limit weight bearing for a period of time.  I start pt at 6 weeks post op.

Depends: After all other conservative therapy has been used and the pain and stiffness become a limiting factor in your day to day life.

Yes: Again this is one of last resort. Some patients can have this done if the rest of the bone stock is good, if not i would recommend fusion of the ankle.

Very: There are several different ankles on the market and you need to leave it to your surgeon for which one is best for you.

Severe pain: Replacement of any joint should be considered only for painful joint that as not responded to non operative management such as therapy and medications.
