Possibly reactive: If you are diabetic but not on medication to treat it, you may be having reactive hypoglycemia. This occurs when the blood sugar rises excessively soon after eating, causing your pancreas to put out Insulin late, resulting in a low sugar about 3 hrs after eating. Rather than eating more frequently, you need to avoid concentrated sweets and carbohydrates that cause the sugar to rise soon after eat.

i am somewhat concerned. i am a diabetic, with no medication. my fasting blood sugar is at 102. i need to get the 12 hour fasting cholesterol test done. should i fast for 12 hours?

Concerned about?: Are you concerned about being diabetic or about fasting for 12 hours?  If you don't feel you are able to fast for 12 hours, you should discuss with your doctor.  Since you are on no meds, then likely your doc feels you would be able to handle it.  Presumably you will get an early am draw so you will not exert yourself to lower bs.  Most people can be ok without having to eat during sleep.

Sugar OK: Your fasting blood sugar is normal, but more information about your cholesterol components needs to be reviewed before I can comment on the clinical risk associated with this isolated and fairly obsolete number. Need information: about the test. Usually results are given in mg/dl and a total cholesterol of 125-200 mg/dl for somewhat over 20 is considered healthy, and ideally the HDL should be above 40 mg/dl and LDL less than 100 mg/dl.  The units you use of 6.20 and 3.11 are not standard values. An unreadable level might suggest that the sample was inadequate or clotted. etc.  Check the package insert of the test.

Exercise and LDL: exercise right before a blood draw might increase HDL (the good cholesterol), but it has not been show to increase LDL (the bad cholesterol).  Longterm exercise lowers LDL.  Your cholesterol results are in a good range, keep exercising!

ANS: time of day, diet for 3+ weeks before, blood drawn before you got out of bed?, family history, your medical history, medications you are taking. Age, gender, lab error, liver failure, acute glomerulonephritis and nephrotic syndrome, starvation, eating way too much fat, or not enough, BCP, thyroid disease, cancer, being too fat/skinny. Ask Dr.

Lipids: For years we've fasted overnight  as you note. Recent evidence suggests it isn't necessary. Practice is only changing slowly being cautious.
