Swimming: If the lats were used to reconstruct your breasts, swimming suchs as front crawl may exacerbate pain symtpoms.  breast stroke, reverse stroke and doggy paddling should all be well tolerated.
In addition, I would not recommend excessive pullup or lat- pull downs

Rest: The mainstays of therapy for muscle strain include resting the muscle and avoiding movements that cause pain; application of ice for up to two days after the injury; wrapping the muscle in an elastic bandage; and pain medications (nsaids) such as ibuprofen, Aleve (otc) or Mobic (meloxicam) (prescription) supplemented with acetaminophen. It may take days to weeks to completely heal.

Several roles: It serves to extend, adduct, transversely extend, and internally rotate the shoulder.  It works with other muscles to provide extension and lateral flexion of the lower spine area.

my latissimus has been having spams that last acouple secs at least 5 times a day for the last month. im not sure what triggers it. i do have some knots. but im not sure massage would or if its a nerve problem?

Consider massage.: I would assume you are not overly using the muscle by pulling heavy objects.  Since a nerve is involved in making the muscle contract, I would follow up with your PCP. Sometimes applying heat can relax the muscle.

Pain and Pulsation: You must get your self examined immediately, especially if you have worked out too hard and there may be a tear in the muscle causing pain and making it easy to feel inside pulsations.

Stretch and Strength: If stretching, icing, strengthening and physical therapy do not help in a few weeks, i would see a sports medicine trained physiatrist (physical medicine ; rehabilitation) doctor.

Messy muscle: Most likely the cause is one of several things:  repetitive use, even if small amplitude; persistent postural stress; or an underlying structural problem, such as rib injury, tumor or low grade infection.

my wife noticed a soft lump, ~1.5 inches, on my left upper back on my latissimus dorsi muscle. she felt it, cant see it, while rubbing back & made a remark thinking it was a muscle knot - but it doesnt feel tender or hurt. should i get it checked?

Sure: It could be a lipoma, a cyst or possibly a knot in the myofascia. If it isn't causing any problems - would have it examined at your next standard medical appointment (ie. annual medical check up).

i have a "burning pain" on the left side of my body just under my armpit, if i look at the muscle chart it could be the latissimus dorsi. it is not a constant pain but it comes and goes. there is also no "specific" movement that makes it worse?
