It require evaluation to determine its truly hirsutism and what is the source of increased androgen: the ovary, the adrenal gland or somewhere else. Sometimes a tumor in the ovary or adrenal is the cause but mostly benign. Treatment options are available.

Could be PCOS ...: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (pcos) is the #1 cause of unwanted hair. To diagnose pcos, we need 2 out of 3 of: 1. Irregular/no periods 2. Clinical signs like acne, hair growth and/or blood tests showing too much male-type hormones 3. Ultrasound appearance of polycystic ovaries: high volumes or antral follicle counts. Adrenal gland problems can also cause xs hair. See an OB or rei / fertility md.

Several reasons: There can be several reasons for that. The thyroid hormone may be abnormal and can cause changes in hair patterns. More commonly, the absolute amounts of female hormones are much lower and therefore the relative amounts of male hormones are usually higher and may cause those changes.

Another disease, porphyria cutanea tarda may cause increased hair growth and blisters/sun sensitivity. Even rarer, an androgen secreting tumor may cause increased facial and body hair. Certain medications may also cause this to occur.
